Fabulous and Fun Juan was my guide, we had a blast and saw at least 33 birds that I recall. Great guide, great personality and just a wonder full day of birds. I highly recommend this experience ✨

A Fantastic Trip through a Magical Region I did a 5 day tour in Reserva Manu. It was quite an experience to descend from the highlands into a very unique part of the Amazon and spend some days there. I especially enjoyed the scenery (Imagine floating down a river in the Amazon and still seeing snow-capped Andes in the distance) and the bird life (very unique, colorful, and abundant). Joseph was friendly, attentive, and safety-conscious. He shared a lot of local knowledge about the people, animals, and history of the region. I plan to return some day for a longer trip so that I can see more of Manu.

The Amazon rainforest like I never imagined Four days was the perfect amount of time to really settle into the rhythm of the jungle. We canoed on oxbow lakes, hiked through primary forest, learned about medicinal plants, and watched macaws gather at the clay lick every morning. Our guide Jose was exceptional calm, knowledgeable, and incredibly observant. He spotted a tapir on day three that we completely would have missed. The entire trip was seamlessly organized by Neotropic Peru from start to finish.

Three days of pure jungle magic This was my first jungle experience and I couldn't have chosen better. Within hours of arriving at the lodge we saw blue and yellow macaws at the clay lick, monkeys swinging through the canopy, and hoatzins on the lake. The night walk was spooky and thrilling — our guide spotted a caiman with his flashlight from 20 meters! The lodge was comfortable and the food was surprisingly great. Perfect for those who want a taste of Manu without a long commitment.

50+ species in one day A birder's dream I've done birding tours on four continents and this was genuinely one of the best. We started at Huacarpay Lagoon at dawn and the waterfowl activity was incredible. Then the Ensifera Hummingbird Garden in the afternoon — I saw the Sword-billed Hummingbird for the first time in my life and nearly cried. José Luis had a spotting scope, knew every call, and was endlessly patient. Whether you're a serious lister or just curious, this tour is extraordinary.

Cusco is incredible Even better with the right guide I only had one full day in Cusco before heading to Machu Picchu, so I wanted to make it count. Neotropic Peru's city tour was the perfect choice. We visited Sacsayhuamán, the Plaza de Armas, the cathedral, and local markets. Our guide wove together Inca history, colonial history, and modern Peruvian culture seamlessly. By the end I felt like I truly understood the city. Highly recommend as a first-day activity to set the tone for your trip.

Witnessing condors in the wild is something else entirely I had no idea what to expect from this tour but it was one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences of my life. Watching Andean condors — with their enormous wingspans — soaring above the valleys was breathtaking. Our guide knew exactly where and when to position us for the best views. He also pointed out other Andean birds throughout the day. If you're even remotely interested in nature or wildlife, this is unmissable.

The most stunning lake I've ever seen Turquoise waters surrounded by snow-capped peaks — it looked like a painting. The hike was moderate but rewarding, and our guide kept the energy up the whole way. Breakfast and lunch were both included and genuinely tasty. They even had horses available for the ascent, which was kind and thoughtful. I was nervous about altitude sickness but they had everything covered including first aid and coca leaves. Absolutely magical day.

The perfect introduction to the Andes We weren't sure if we should do the Sacred Valley or go straight to Machu Picchu — best decision we made was doing both! The Valley tour took us through Chinchero, the weaving demonstrations were fascinating, and Ollantaytambo blew our minds. Our guide never rushed us and always made time for questions. Small group, friendly atmosphere, gorgeous scenery. A must-do before Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu Full Day I had dreamed of visiting Machu Picchu for years, and Neotropic Peru made it everything I hoped for. The early morning train through the Sacred Valley was magical on its own. Our guide Bryan was passionate, knowledgeable, and took us to the best spots for photos. He explained the history of the Inca Empire in a way that made it all come alive. Perfectly organized from pickup to drop-off. This is the real deal — don't book with anyone else!

0
  • 4 Days
  • Amazon Comfort Lodges
  • 1837 ft. / 560 m.
  • Moderate

Four days. Cloud forest, lek and rainforest, with a comfortable bed every night.

The 4-day Manu Rainforest Experience is the best balance between time and experience. In just four days you go from the Andes of Cusco to the lowland rainforest of the Manu Biosphere Reserve, with a night in the cloud forest at Cock of the Rock Lodge and two nights at Manu Biolodge. Every lodge has a private bathroom, hot water, electricity and wifi, so the trip is comfortable even for first-time visitors to the Amazon.

On the first day you cross the Andes, stop at pre-Inca burial towers and a colonial town, have lunch at Wayquecha Biological Station and reach the cloud forest in time to watch the Andean cock-of-the-rock at its lek. The second day belongs to the Manu Road, one of the great wildlife roads of South America, and ends with a short walk in the private reserve at Manu Biolodge. The third day is a full day in the lowlands, with a hummingbird garden, a short boat ride to the Machuwasi oxbow lake and a night walk. On the fourth day you return to Cusco in the afternoon.

This tour is not made only for birders. It is made for travellers who want to enjoy the biodiversity of Manu in a calm and comfortable way: couples, families, friends and curious travellers who prefer short walks, good food and a bed to come back to. Our local guides explain the forest, help you spot wildlife and adapt the pace to the group.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco, Wayquecha and the lek at Cock of the Rock Lodge

Over the Andes and into the cloud forest, in time for the cock-of-the-rocks.

We meet you at your Cusco hotel at 7:00 a.m. and drive through the Cusco valley. The first stop is Huacarpay Lake, where waterbirds and calm scenery make an easy introduction to wildlife. We continue to Ninamarca, where pre-Inca burial towers rise from the plateau, and to the colonial town of Paucartambo, where traditions are still part of everyday life.

The road climbs to Acjanaco Pass, above 3,500 m, and then descends into the cloud forest. We stop for lunch at Wayquecha Biological Station, at around 2,900 m, a place surrounded by mist, moss and tree ferns. There is time to look at the first birds and to feel the change in climate.

The afternoon continues down the Manu Road to Cock of the Rock Lodge. Before dusk we walk to the lek, where the males of the Andean cock-of-the-rock gather to display. With bright orange-red plumage, loud calls and quick movements, they put on a show that is hard to forget. We then have dinner and spend the night at the lodge.

What you may see: Andean cock-of-the-rock, tanagers, hummingbirds, endemic birds, orchids, monkeys, mosses and ferns.

At a glance: easy · around 9 hours of driving with stops · overnight at Cock of the Rock Lodge, approx. 1,500 m.

Guide’s tip: the lek is best in silence. Avoid flash and sudden movements.

Day 2The Manu Road and arrival at Manu Biolodge

A morning in the cloud forest and an afternoon in the foothills of the Amazon.

Those who want a very early start can join an optional visit to the lek before breakfast, when the birds are most active. After breakfast we explore the cloud forest along the Manu Road, with stops at forest edges and viewpoints where mixed flocks, tree ferns, orchids and waterfalls are common. Your guide knows the best spots and the best hours, and shares the stories of this famous road. We return to Cock of the Rock Lodge for lunch.

After lunch we continue toward Kosñipata and Manu Biolodge. As the road descends, the air becomes warmer and the forest changes, with larger leaves, palms and the sounds of the lowlands. After checking in, we take a short walk in the private reserve to enjoy the end of the day. Dinner is served at the lodge.

What you may see: toucans, tanagers, hummingbirds, butterflies, orchids, forest insects and monkeys.

At a glance: easy · around 4 hours of driving and a short walk · overnight at Manu Biolodge, approx. 500 m.

Guide’s tip: from today use insect repellent in the evenings. The lowlands are warm and humid.

Day 3Hummingbirds, Machuwasi oxbow lake and night walk

A full day in the rainforest, with a box lunch.

Breakfast at the lodge is followed by a visit to a hummingbird garden, where different species come and go at the feeders. We then drive to Atalaya, a small river port, and continue by boat toward the Machuwasi oxbow lake. The trail to the lake runs through riverside forest, and the lake itself is a quiet place to look for hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, caimans, capybaras and monkeys.

We stop here for a box lunch and for time to observe without hurry. Back at Manu Biolodge in the afternoon, you can rest, enjoy the gardens or take a hot shower before dinner.

After dinner we set out on a night walk along the trails of the private reserve. Guided and with headlamps, it is a short and easy route that reveals frogs, spiders, insects and other animals that only appear in the dark.

What you may see: hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, caimans, capybaras, monkeys, hummingbirds, frogs, insects.

At a glance: easy · short boat ride and walks of 2 to 3 hours · overnight at Manu Biolodge.

Guide’s tip: bring long sleeves, a hat and a headlamp.

Day 5Return to Cusco

Back over the Andes, with lunch at Wayquecha.

After an early breakfast we leave Manu Biolodge and begin the return to Cusco. The road climbs again through the cloud forest, and we make stops for views and birds along the way. We have lunch at Wayquecha, a pleasant break at around 2,900 m before the final climb over the Andes. We arrive in Cusco between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m., depending on road conditions, and drop you at your hotel.

We recommend booking your flight out of Cusco for the evening, after 8:00 p.m., or for the following day.

Is 4 days enough for Manu?

It is enough to experience the cloud forest and the lowland rainforest in comfort, and to see the main highlights of the Manu Biosphere Reserve: the cock-of-the-rock lek, the Manu Road, a hummingbird garden and an oxbow lake. If you want a deeper experience, our 5-day Manu Biosphere Expedition adds a night at Wayquecha, and our 6-day and 7-day tours go into the Reserved Zone.

Is this tour only for birders?

No. It is designed for travellers who want to enjoy the biodiversity of Manu in a comfortable and relaxed way. Birds are a highlight, but you also see plants, butterflies, monkeys, caimans and the forest landscapes. Birders are welcome, and the guide can slow down the pace on request.

What are the lodges like?

Cock of the Rock Lodge is set in the cloud forest at around 1,500 m, and Manu Biolodge is in the lowlands near Pillcopata. Both have private bathroom, hot water, electricity and wifi, though connection can be limited in remote areas.

Will I see the Andean cock-of-the-rock?

It is very likely, because the lek is a regular display ground, but wildlife can never be guaranteed. The early morning and late afternoon are the best times, and the optional dawn visit gives you a second chance.

Does this tour enter the Manu Reserved Zone?

No. This Manu Biosphere Expedition visits the cloud forest and the lowlands of the Manu Biosphere Reserve outside the Reserved Zone. For a river expedition into the Reserved Zone, see our 6-day and 7-day tours.

How difficult is the tour?

Easy. Walks are short and on gentle trails. The main effort is the amount of time in the vehicle, especially on Day 1 and Day 5. There is no trekking and no camping.

When is the best time to go?

The dry season, from April to November, offers the best road conditions and the most stable weather. The rainy season (December to March) is greener and wetter, with more road delays. Wildlife is active all year.

What is the weather like?

It changes with altitude. Wayquecha is cool and can be cold at night, Cock of the Rock Lodge is mild, and the lowlands are warm and humid. Rain is possible at any time, especially from December to March.

Is it suitable for children or older travellers?

Yes, if they are in good health and comfortable with long days in a vehicle.

Can I do this tour as a private trip?

Yes. Private departures can be arranged for families, couples and photographers, with a flexible schedule.
