Fabulous and Fun Juan was my guide, we had a blast and saw at least 33 birds that I recall. Great guide, great personality and just a wonder full day of birds. I highly recommend this experience ✨

A Fantastic Trip through a Magical Region I did a 5 day tour in Reserva Manu. It was quite an experience to descend from the highlands into a very unique part of the Amazon and spend some days there. I especially enjoyed the scenery (Imagine floating down a river in the Amazon and still seeing snow-capped Andes in the distance) and the bird life (very unique, colorful, and abundant). Joseph was friendly, attentive, and safety-conscious. He shared a lot of local knowledge about the people, animals, and history of the region. I plan to return some day for a longer trip so that I can see more of Manu.

The Amazon rainforest like I never imagined Four days was the perfect amount of time to really settle into the rhythm of the jungle. We canoed on oxbow lakes, hiked through primary forest, learned about medicinal plants, and watched macaws gather at the clay lick every morning. Our guide Jose was exceptional calm, knowledgeable, and incredibly observant. He spotted a tapir on day three that we completely would have missed. The entire trip was seamlessly organized by Neotropic Peru from start to finish.

Three days of pure jungle magic This was my first jungle experience and I couldn't have chosen better. Within hours of arriving at the lodge we saw blue and yellow macaws at the clay lick, monkeys swinging through the canopy, and hoatzins on the lake. The night walk was spooky and thrilling — our guide spotted a caiman with his flashlight from 20 meters! The lodge was comfortable and the food was surprisingly great. Perfect for those who want a taste of Manu without a long commitment.

50+ species in one day A birder's dream I've done birding tours on four continents and this was genuinely one of the best. We started at Huacarpay Lagoon at dawn and the waterfowl activity was incredible. Then the Ensifera Hummingbird Garden in the afternoon — I saw the Sword-billed Hummingbird for the first time in my life and nearly cried. José Luis had a spotting scope, knew every call, and was endlessly patient. Whether you're a serious lister or just curious, this tour is extraordinary.

Cusco is incredible Even better with the right guide I only had one full day in Cusco before heading to Machu Picchu, so I wanted to make it count. Neotropic Peru's city tour was the perfect choice. We visited Sacsayhuamán, the Plaza de Armas, the cathedral, and local markets. Our guide wove together Inca history, colonial history, and modern Peruvian culture seamlessly. By the end I felt like I truly understood the city. Highly recommend as a first-day activity to set the tone for your trip.

Witnessing condors in the wild is something else entirely I had no idea what to expect from this tour but it was one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences of my life. Watching Andean condors — with their enormous wingspans — soaring above the valleys was breathtaking. Our guide knew exactly where and when to position us for the best views. He also pointed out other Andean birds throughout the day. If you're even remotely interested in nature or wildlife, this is unmissable.

The most stunning lake I've ever seen Turquoise waters surrounded by snow-capped peaks — it looked like a painting. The hike was moderate but rewarding, and our guide kept the energy up the whole way. Breakfast and lunch were both included and genuinely tasty. They even had horses available for the ascent, which was kind and thoughtful. I was nervous about altitude sickness but they had everything covered including first aid and coca leaves. Absolutely magical day.

The perfect introduction to the Andes We weren't sure if we should do the Sacred Valley or go straight to Machu Picchu — best decision we made was doing both! The Valley tour took us through Chinchero, the weaving demonstrations were fascinating, and Ollantaytambo blew our minds. Our guide never rushed us and always made time for questions. Small group, friendly atmosphere, gorgeous scenery. A must-do before Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu Full Day I had dreamed of visiting Machu Picchu for years, and Neotropic Peru made it everything I hoped for. The early morning train through the Sacred Valley was magical on its own. Our guide Bryan was passionate, knowledgeable, and took us to the best spots for photos. He explained the history of the Inca Empire in a way that made it all come alive. Perfectly organized from pickup to drop-off. This is the real deal — don't book with anyone else!

Manu Biosphere Expedition 5 Days

0
  • 5 Days
  • Amazon Comfort Lodges
  • 1837 ft. / 560 m.
  • Moderate

Five days. Three lodges. One mountain slope that turns into a rainforest.

The 5-day Manu Biosphere Expedition is our most complete comfort program in the Manu Biosphere Reserve. You sleep in three different ecosystems: the upper cloud forest at Wayquecha Biological Station, the mid-elevation cloud forest at Cock of the Rock Lodge, and the lowland rainforest at Manu Biolodge. In every lodge you have a private bathroom, hot water, electricity and wifi, so you can spend your days in the wild and your evenings in comfort.

The route follows one of the most famous roads in South America, the old track that drops from the Andes of Cusco to the Amazon basin. On the way you cross high grassland and pre-Inca burial towers, walk across a hanging bridge built for scientific research in a mystical cloud forest, watch the Andean cock-of-the-rock at its display ground, visit a hummingbird garden, take a short boat ride to an oxbow lake full of life, and walk the trails of a private reserve after dark.

This is not a tour only for birders. It is designed for travellers who want to enjoy the biodiversity of Manu in a comfortable and relaxed way: couples, families, friends, photographers and curious nature lovers. Walks are short and easy, your luggage stays in the lodge, and there are no long river journeys or camping nights. Our local guides explain what you see, adapt the pace to the group and help you spot wildlife without turning the trip into a race.

What to Expect
  • Wayquecha hanging bridge. A walk through mystical cloud forest on a bridge designed for research, with species typical of the transition between the Andes and the cloud forest.
  • Wayquecha Biological Station. Sleep in a research station and birding lodge at around 2,900 m, in the middle of misty montane forest.
  • Andean cock-of-the-rock. Visit the lek at Cock of the Rock Lodge, where the males display in bright orange-red plumage. An optional dawn visit gives you a second chance.
  • The Manu Road. Explore a famous road through cloud forest, with tree ferns, orchids, mixed flocks of birds and waterfalls.
  • Three lodges with real comfort. Private bathrooms, hot water, electricity and wifi throughout the trip.
  • Hummingbird garden. Watch several species at close range, ideal for photography.
  • Machuwasi oxbow lake. A calm lake in the lowlands, with chances to see hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, caimans, capybaras and monkeys.
  • Private reserve at Manu Biolodge. Walk the forest trails near the lodge, and join a night walk to find frogs, insects and nocturnal wildlife.
  • Pre-Inca burial towers at Ninamarca. A quiet cultural stop on the first morning.
  • Huacarpay Lake. A first birdwatching stop with waterbirds, close to Cusco.
  • Colonial Paucartambo. A traditional mountain town on the way to the cloud forest.
  • Relaxed pace. Short walks, early dinners and time to enjoy each lodge.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco, Paucartambo and the hanging bridge at Wayquecha

From the Cusco valley to a cloud forest research station.

We pick you up at your Cusco hotel at 7:00 a.m. and leave the city toward the Cusco valley. Our first stop is Huacarpay Lake, a wetland where we look for waterbirds and enjoy a calm start to the trip. The road then climbs to Ninamarca, where pre-Inca burial towers stand on the open plateau, and continues to the colonial town of Paucartambo, famous for its festivals and traditions. (optional coffee in Paucartambo).

From Paucartambo the road keeps rising to Acjanaco Pass, above 3,500 m, where the grassland ends and the cloud forest begins on the other side. A short descent brings us to Wayquecha Biological Station, at around 2,900 m, where we have lunch.

In the afternoon we walk through the forest to the hanging bridge. The bridge was originally designed for scientific research, since Wayquecha is a biological station, and it lets you cross the forest at tree level. The trail is rich in species typical of the transition between the Andes and the cloud forest, such as mountain toucans, tanagers, hummingbirds and many plants covered in moss. After the walk there is time to rest, have a hot drink and enjoy dinner in the lodge.

What you may see: mixed flocks of birds, hummingbirds, tanagers, mountain toucans, mosses, bromeliads and orchids.

At a glance: easy · around 6 hours of driving with stops, and a short walk · overnight at Wayquecha, approx. 2,900 m.

Guide’s tip: nights at Wayquecha are cool. Bring a warm layer for the evening.

Day 2Birdwatching at Wayquecha and the lek at Cock of the Rock Lodge

A morning in the high forest and an afternoon with Peru’s national bird.

After breakfast we spend the morning birdwatching around Wayquecha, walking the trails and the road at the best hours for activity. This is one of the best places on the Manu Road to see the birds of the upper cloud forest, and your guide helps you find them even if you have never used binoculars before.

We then continue down the road to Cock of the Rock Lodge, where we have lunch. Here the air is warmer and the forest is greener, at around 1,500 m. After lunch we settle in, enjoy the gardens and feeders, and in the late afternoon visit to the lek of the Andean cock-of-the-rock. The males gather at a traditional display ground to compete for the attention of females, with bright orange-red plumage, loud calls and sudden jumps. It is one of the most memorable wildlife moments in Peru.

We spend the night at Cock of the Rock Lodge, with dinner and time to relax.

What you may see: Andean cock-of-the-rock, hummingbirds, green honeycreepers, tanagers, butterflies and possibly monkeys.

At a glance: easy · around 5 hours of driving with stops · overnight at Cock of the Rock Lodge, approx. 1,500 m.

Guide’s tip: keep your camera ready and your voice low at the lek. The birds are shy and the best moments come in silence.

Day 3Manu Road, cloud forest and arrival at Manu Biolodge

The last hours of the cloud forest, then the first of the rainforest.

For those who want an early start, there is an optional visit to the lek before breakfast, when the cock-of-the-rocks are most active. Then we have breakfast and set out to explore the cloud forest along the Manu Road, stopping at viewpoints and forest edges where mixed flocks of birds, tree ferns, orchids and waterfalls are common. We return to Cock of the Rock Lodge for lunch.

After lunch we continue downhill toward Pillcopata and Manu Biolodge, which is only about 20 minutes from the town. There is no boat and no river crossing to reach the lodge. The temperature rises and the cloud forest gives way to lowland vegetation. After checking in, we take a gentle walk in the private reserve to feel the change in the forest and to see what is active at the end of the day. Dinner and a quiet night follow in a comfortable room.

What you may see: tanagers, toucans, hummingbirds, butterflies, orchids, tree ferns, forest birds and insects.

At a glance: easy · around 4 hours of driving and a short walk · overnight at Manu Biolodge, approx. 500 m.

Guide’s tip: use insect repellent from this point on. The lowlands are warm and humid.

Day 4Hummingbird garden, Machuwasi oxbow lake and a night walk

A full day in the lowland rainforest, with a box lunch.

After breakfast we visit a hummingbird garden, where different species come to the feeders. It is a colorful and peaceful way to start the day. We then drive to Atalaya, a small river port on the Alto Madre de Dios, and take a short boat ride toward the Machuwasi oxbow lake.

Machuwasi is a calm lake surrounded by forest, and it is a good place to see hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, caimans, capybaras and monkeys. We walk the trail to the lake, spend time in quiet observation and have our box lunch in the forest. In the afternoon we return to the lodge to rest.

After dinner, we set out on a night walk along the trails of the private reserve. With a headlamp and a guide, you discover frogs, insects, spiders and other creatures that only appear after dark. It is a short, easy walk that gives a very different view of the rainforest.

What you may see: hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, caimans, capybaras, monkeys, hummingbirds, tree frogs, insects.

At a glance: easy · short boat ride and walks of 2 to 3 hours · overnight at Manu Biolodge.

Guide’s tip: wear long sleeves and bring a headlamp for the night walk.

Day 5Return to Cusco

Back over the Andes, with lunch at Wayquecha.

After an early breakfast we leave Manu Biolodge and begin the return to Cusco. The road climbs again through the cloud forest, and we make stops for views and birds along the way. We have lunch at Wayquecha, a pleasant break at around 2,900 m before the final climb over the Andes. We arrive in Cusco between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m., depending on road conditions, and drop you at your hotel.

We recommend booking your flight out of Cusco for the evening, after 8:00 p.m., or for the following day.

At a glance: easy · around 8 hours of driving with stops · tour ends in Cusco, approx. 3,400 m.

What is the 5-day Manu Biosphere Expedition?

It is a trip where you sleep in comfortable lodges instead of basic buildings, and you explore Manu by short walks and a short boat ride. You enjoy the cloud forest and the rainforest of the Manu Biosphere Reserve with private bathroom, hot water, electricity and wifi, and you keep your luggage in the room.

Is this tour only for birders?

No. It is designed for travellers who want to enjoy the biodiversity of Manu in a comfortable and relaxed way. Birds are a highlight, but you also see plants, butterflies, monkeys, caimans and the forest landscapes. Birders are welcome, and the guide can slow down the pace on request.

What are the lodges like?

Wayquecha is a biological station and birding lodge at around 2,900 m, Cock of the Rock Lodge sits in the cloud forest at around 1,500 m, and Manu Biolodge is a private reserv in the lowlands. All have private bathroom, hot water, electricity and wifi.

What is the hanging bridge at Wayquecha?

It is a bridge across the forest, originally designed for scientific research, since Wayquecha is a biological station. The walk goes through mystical cloud forest and lets you see species typical of the transition between the Andes and the cloud forest.

Will I see the Andean cock-of-the-rock?

It is very likely, because the lek is a regular display ground, but wildlife can never be guaranteed. The early morning and late afternoon are the best times, and the optional dawn visit gives you a second chance.

Does this tour enter the Manu Reserved Zone?

No. This Manu Biosphere Expedition visits the cloud forest and the lowlands of the Manu Biosphere Reserve outside the Reserved Zone. For a river expedition into the Reserved Zone, see our 6-day and 7-day tours.

How difficult is the tour?

Easy. Walks are short and on gentle trails. The main effort is the amount of time in the vehicle, especially on Day 1 and Day 5. There is no trekking and no camping.

When is the best time to go?

The dry season, from April to November, offers the best road conditions and the most stable weather. The rainy season (December to March) is greener and wetter, with more road delays. Wildlife is active all year.

What is the weather like?

It changes with altitude. Wayquecha is cool and can be cold at night, Cock of the Rock Lodge is mild, and the lowlands are warm and humid. Rain is possible at any time, especially from December to March.

Is it suitable for children or older travellers?

Yes, if they are in good health and comfortable with long days in a vehicle.

Can I do this tour as a private trip?

Yes. Private departures can be arranged for families, couples and photographers, with a flexible schedule.
