We depart Cusco early in the morning, traveling through scenic valleys and traditional Andean communities. Our journey includes a stop in Paucartambo, a charming colonial town, where we’ll visit a fascinating local museum. Along the way, we’ll enjoy a packed lunch surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. As we continue to the Cloud Forest, we’ll enter a region rich in endemic wildlife, including the Spectacled Bear, Cock-of-the-Rock, and diverse flora like orchids, bromeliads, and ferns. We’ll arrive at our Amazon Lodge for a comfortable night surrounded by the lush forest.
After breakfast, we continue our journey to the small town of Pilcopata, and then to the Port of Atalaya on the Madre de Dios River (600 m.a.s.l.). On the way, we’ll make a stop to visit local coca plantations, offering a glimpse into this unique aspect of Amazonian culture.
From here, enjoy stunning views overlooking the vast Lowland Rainforest. We’ll board our boat at Atalaya Port and navigate down the pristine waters of the Madre de Dios River to our next Rainforest Lodge, exploring trails in this transition zone between high and low amazon rainforest, our guide will introduce the unique diversity of wildlife around us.
Finishing the day, we’ll have the option of a night walk to observe the forest’s nocturnal insects and amphibians.
At sunrise, we’ll take a boat ride to the Collpa, a clay wall on the Alto Madre de Dios River, where a variety of parrots—including blue-headed parrots, white-eyed parakeets, and possibly macaws—gather daily to feed on mineral-rich clay. After this unforgettable display, we return to the lodge for breakfast.
Later, we’ll take a short hike to visit the Ceiba tree, one of the largest and oldest Amazonian plant species.
In the afternoon, we’ll visit Machuwasi Lake, where we’ll paddle quietly on a catamaran, ideal for spotting diverse birdlife such as hoatzins (a prehistoric bird), horned screamers, red-capped cardinals, herons, and cormorants. Along the trail, we may encounter monkeys, capybaras, snakes, and other wildlife.
We start the day with breakfast and then head back by boat to the Port of Atalaya. Our vehicle awaits to take us back to Cusco, with a special stop at Hummingbird garden (550 m.a.s.l.), a sustainable conservation center where we can observe and photograph a variety of hummingbirds, as well as toucans, king vultures, monkeys, and—if we’re lucky—a sloth. We return to Cusco by early evening.
The dry season from May to September is ideal for clearer weather and optimal wildlife sightings. However, the rainy season from November to March adds a lush, vibrant touch to the rainforest.
